It reminds me of a story my mother told me when I was a kid, about when she was young and worked as a maid in a wealthy family's house. The wife was a socialite whose friends were a waste of space. The husband was a quiet, no-nonsense chap who worked for a living. He came home one evening to find her hosting a party. She told him to get changed, as his guests would be offended if he did not join her. He levelly told her, "Those who know me, know what I'm like. Those who don't, don't matter."
